| Sculptor Cordell Taylor is based in Salt Lake City, but keeps close contact with Colorado both artistically and through his innovative gallery located in Downtown Denver. Cordells exhibition resume reads like a virtual world-tour. He has exhibited extensively in the U.S. and his work has been featured in the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland and Japan. In addition to opening galleries in Salt Lake City and Denver, Cordell founded Surface, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting other contemporary artists through community projects, professional development and mentoring programs. Cordell has received numerous awards for his artistic achievement and community involvement. In 2002, he was honored with the Salt Lake City Mayors Award in the arts and he received a commission from the Salt Lake Olympic Committee. He was also invited to participate in the Kennedy Center for the Arts Imagination Celebration. Additionally, Cordell has been recognized for artistic achievement from the Masaryk Academy in Prague, the National Sculpture Society in New York, the NEA and the Utah Arts Council among others. His work appears in both national and international collections. Cordells international and community experience is reflected in his work which addresses the global culture. As he explains, As a Sculptor of the physical world, I am struggling to adapt to new realities and often ask what my role is going to be in this new global world. Technological advancement such as the internet, science and communications give Cordell new mediums and subject matter for his recent work. Using old radiators and computer boards juxtaposed with organic wooden forms and copper, Cordell morphs otherwise trash materials into powerfully-suggestive, finely-crafted works of art. He considers his materials to be central to the symbolic nature of his work. He revives and reanimates the inanimate, fusing materials and technology. Feeling both frustrated and intoxicated with technological advancement, Cordell addresses the key issues for human survival in the information-age jungle. |
